A Praise Dance Testimony

My mother was an actress who was committed to the community theater
in NYC. Because of that I had the unique opportunity to grow up in
the theater. I also have a special love for the arts because of my
childhood being a daughter of an actress who grew up in the dance and arts capital of the world.

I started studying dance at a very young age. I also majored in dance in college. When I was in my first year in college, a young lady witnessed to me about the love of Jesus for three weeks during lunch. In the third week in my room I asked Jesus to be my Lord.

In my second and third year in college I went through a long stage of seeking the Lord for what He called me to do with my life.

Jesus made it very clear to me that I was born to praise Him in the
dance. I am called to dance for Jesus my Lord and Savior.

Now it is your turn. What is your dance testimony? I would love to hear your dancing testimony. Please tell me by leaving a comment below.
Enjoy the praise dance life,

  1. timeka burlew says:

Mrs. Jocelyn that was awesome! As a child I loved to dance. As I became a teen dancing was no longer a passion for me. I enjoyed watching others dance but wouldn’t dance myself.
When I gave my life to Christ I suddenly had the passion again. I felt it in my heart & soul. I started to feel insecure & didn’t want to dance b/c I have no formal training. But the Lord began to give me dreams with complete choreography. I was amazed…I am now dancing for Him & refuse to stop.

  2. Betty says:

Praise the Lord, Jocelyn! I, too, used to do what we called modern dance in high school & college. I was saved in ’81, but it was not until the yr 2000 that I began praise dancing and I love it–a wonderful way to use our talents for the glory of God– Prophetess Betty Sims

  3. Jocelyn says:

Wow Betty thank you so much for taking time out of your life to share.
Are now part of a team in your local Church.

  4. Jocelyn says:

Timeka i am so glad to here from you.
I am glad you have decided to not stop dancing for Him. It is a wonderful testimony that God has given you your passion and dream back.

  5. Anna Litchenberg says:

    Dear Jocelyn,
I’m so excited to find you on the internet and become familiar with your ministry. The Lord called me to dance in 1991 after I saw a woman at our church express worship with a hawiian style dance. I was blown away that we could worship our King of Kings with our whole being and started studying scriptures and got involved with a local dance group that celebrated the messianic feasts and also taught myself with videos. The Lord has had me lead a couple of dance groups over the years but now I’m “solo” again! My desire is to tell “His” story through movement! Either myself or my team has ministered in churches, workshops, senior communities and a woman’s prison. I’m in need of encouragement! How do I participate in your Tele-Classes…I don’t have a URL Web Site and I’m not on face book or other social network sites? Also, I need a new double circle dress. Do you recommend any internet company for worship apparel? I did sign up for your newsletter and received the first one today on Hebrew and Greek Word Study for Dance. I read Debbie Roberts book “Rejoice” many years ago and it was a good reminder.
May God continue to annoint and bless your dance ministry.

  6. Wow, I was blessed by each of you sharing your dance testimony.
I never studied dance as a child, although I always loved dancing. I remember being in dance recitals around the age of 4 or 5, but that was about it. Maybe, 3 or 4 years ago I volunteered at a woman’s shelter with my church and did a dance selection and it’s really been non-stop from there! God sent many people after that into my life to confirm and encourage that this is a gift HE gave me and to use it to give Him glory. I’m so thankful for this!

  7. Christina says:

    Hello Jocelyn,
Before I give my testimony I wanted to say that I enjoy your ministry. I watch your videos when I need encouragement and the Holy Spirit comes through every time.
As a child I wanted to be an actress and a choreographer and loved to entertian my family and friends by singing and dancing and reciting scenes from my favorite movies; and I must say they all loved it. However, I also sruggled with low self esteem and as I got older I started to feel that I wasn’t good enough and that I didn’t have real talent at all. But, thanks be to God when I was saved at 12yrs in 1998 and it was then the Lord showered me with His love and showed me that He would use me in the dance. I started to train when I was 14yrs at a local christian studio where I learned dance technique. I also learned technique from the dance squad I was on for 2yrs in high school. So, it has been 12yrs and I am still dancing for the Lord.
I am also seeking to start a praise dance company. I am planning to rent a sutdio and start offering a few classes in September of this year. I am very nervous because praise dance is new to the area I live. If you would please keep me in your prayers that I will stay focused on the goal, which is to spread the gospel through dance.
    Thank you! God Bless you!

  8. Shaquanna Brinson says:

That was a dynamic testimony and I see how you have such fantastic facial expressions. When I was a little girl, I was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder. It was affecting my whole life. I could not consentrate on my classwork or homework, I was always in trouble, I would disrupt every class, and I was always in the principals office. Then one day my church decided to start a dance ministry, I was 9 at that time, I was utterly mezmorized by their dancing and astonished that it was in the church, the one place I loved to go. At that time the dance leader was Christina Collins and from that moment on I was stuck on liturgical dance and I took classes in ballet, modern, jazz, and 1 class of tap. My grandmother was excited because she said that this was a way to channel all of my extra energy but I could not even imagine that it would affect my life the way that it has. My grades improved, I was no longer on so much medication and I didn’t get into too much trouble, although I still had a lot of energy. Even now there are times when I feel sad and weiry, but when I get up and dance, everything else fades away, and I feel nothing but the presence of the Lord.

  9. Fatima says:

    I love reading these stories!
Well here is mine. I have always loved dance, I danced in the community center programs growing up in New york city and I went to A jr. high that was dedicated to the arts. I have always seen dance in my head, I figured it was something that I just loved to do. One day in 2005 I saw a group our teens minister in my church and there was an unjuntion in my spirit. In 2006 some one told me I would lead a dance ministry and I thought they were joking, then when the time came, I ran to the wilderness for a year. In 2007 I lead the ministry but didn’t understand what I was called to do fully till 2008. I praise God because his hand has been with me every step of the way. it has been times when the enemy has tried to pervert the gift for his use, but God will be glorified and forever will HE reign in my life.
    God Bless, Minister Fortenberry

  10. Sharita Overman says:

Hello, my name is Sharita. I live in Suriname – South Amerika. I always loved dancing, but when I got saved and saw how God was praised in the dance, it touched my heart. But there was so little knowledge about the ministry itself and I just started as part of the group(already helping with choreography) and so it went on till it was confirmed that God was really using me in this ministry through testimonies of what people experienced when I was dancing. It’s been 15 years now, but I’ve studied a lot and now I have knowledge of the Word so minister the way God wants it. For almost 9 years we have a dance school also. That’s in short how I started. And of course help others first to understand the voice of God if their chosen for this ministry and than to do ministry. Not how I started. God bless you.

  11. Ramell says:

    Dear Jocelyn,
I have been dancing since age 3 (ballet, tap, jazz and modern dance). At age 8, desire ministered my first liturgical dance, “Oh Holy Night”. At that time I didn’t truly understand the dynamic of praising God in the dance. I took classes all throughout my adult life. In 2000 I was led my God to begin to use my gift for His glory. The enemy attempted to take me out His people. September 2010 marks my 36th year in learning the art of dance and 10 years strictly ministering before God and His people, in which I have spent much of that time as a dance ministry lead and choreographer.

  12. Denise says:

I was called into Christian dance in the late 80′s. There was a dance ministry at my church, and the Lord kept speaking to me about joining it. However, I looked at them, and didn’t consider it ‘dancing.’ I didn’t take dance lessons until I was in college. I then took Modern Dance. When I graduated, I took Ballet, which I loved, since a child. I would always read books on ballet. In about 1988, I finally answered the Lord’s call to dance ministry; I have been involved in it since then. First, I was a member of the dance team, then within a few years, I was the dance leader. I have been this since 1993.

  13. Loretta Speed says:

    Greetings Sis. Richard!
I found you on YouTube about 2 weeks ago and was so enthralled with your teaching video that I decided to subscribe.
I’m probably the oldest dance person in your circle of dancers. I started off with a musical/drama/performing arts background at the age of 5. I come from a family of 5 siblings and my parents pushed us to be involved in every possible program that would enhance our social development. I went to college 40 years ago and majored in piano, voice, and performance. I also studied dance (ballet, modern, jazz, tap, etc.) while in college. My dream was to become a famous opera singer but God had another plan.
Yes, I danced for the world for years after I left college but then it was time to switch partners. I was saved in 1979 and began to develop my liturgical dance skills. I was blessed with the gift of choreography and wanted to use it to teach others. I have been asked to do a few workshops for churches starting their dance ministry.
I founded a performing arts ministry for teens (Teens for the Kingdom) in 1997 that focused on every aspect of the arts. I am presently the director for our collegiate ministry dance group (Spirit of David). Although I have some health challenges that limit my ability to move like I used to, I usually ask the younger dancers to demonstrate the moves for me. It would probably help if I could lose a little weight.
I would really enjoy a tele-class on dance movements since I have not kept up to date on things that might have changed from years back. I probably couldn’t pay much due to my financial situation.
I really gained a lot of insight from your videos–you are such a graceful dancer. You are highly favored by God!

  14. Dance4christ says:

Hello Jocelyn, my name is Enrika Greathouse, I am one of the editors for Dance4Christ.net
First of all thank you for your commitment to praise dance, please know that many people are truly blessed by your ministry!!
Well let’s see, my life in dance goes back to when I was in third grade, that was the year I choreographed my first piece, it was for a talent show.
Ever since I was young, I have always loved dancing, and knew I wanted to be a professional choreographer. I also grew up in church, and from a young age knew that God had a purpose for my life. So for me, my life is a journey to see how God is merging my love for Jesus and my passion for expression through the arts, to shine his LOVE, His intentions, and an overall celebration of true life.
I feel like I am celebrating God and all of his goodness, by not only praising God through dance, but enjoying the gift that dance is. I really enjoy dancing, and I know the Father enjoys me enjoying the gift he gave me.
For the past 10 years, I have worked with alot of Christian Artist, and have had the chance to dance professionally within a God Fearing environment/Industry.
In my travels I have come across so many talented, annointed and committed dancers, and dance ministries. And with the power of the internet, I am currently focused on helping to shine light on all of the wonderful Christian Dance Ministries, projects, and organizations across the country that Dance 4 Christ. I love what I’m doing and can’t wait to see where God is taking me.
Whoo hoo! Please keep posting and let’s enjoy this thing together.

  15. Merdis Timmons says:

I never had any dance lessons, but I always admired this young girl in my church praise dancing. I believe that she was 14 at the time. It touched me to see the Lord use her and I told God I wanted to learn how to dance. This lady joined my church and begin teaching praise dance. I tried it, but I had two left feet. Everyone would laugh at me in practice. I wanted to quit and give up because I felt that maybe dance wasn’t for me. My pastor encouraged me not to quit. I can remember like it was yesterday, one Saturday we were having praise and worship rehearsal and my church. The anointing was so rich in the the worship and the spirit of God fell upon and I began to dance under the anointing. I was so shocked. And I told God after that day that I will dance for His glory. Every since then God has been showing me choreography for dances. He has really instilled in me to worship Him. Praise dance has really changed my life. It is my platform to get to the Father. I thank God that sees fit to use someone that had two left feet (for His Glory).

  16. Lisa Perry says:

Grace and Peace! Jocelyn, I just want you to know that your website has truly been a blessing to me! Here is my testimony:
I have always loved dance for as long as I can remember. I studied a little ballet and tap as a child and a little modern dance as a teenager. When I went off to college I became a member of a dance team for three years. Shortly after graduating college old friends of mine began ministering to me about becoming saved. I had always loved the Lord, but understanding true salvation was new to me. When I married and joined a little church in Virginia the Lord ministered to me about dance through, what I thought to be a terrible event. While our firstborn daughter was in the hospital, I spent many days at the Ronald MacDonald house. During those days I would pray for her, but I found myself worshiping and praising God which was such an awesome experience. My baby went on to be with the Lord at 9 weeks old, but I knew I was supposed to worship Him through dance regardless to my situation or how I felt. I didn’t start right away, but now, 17 years later, I am still dancing for the Lord! I am the dance ministry leader at my church and I know that worship takes you to another place in Him. When I worship I can put off tiredness and sickness and be lifted up in my spirit. I just want everyone to share this experience! “Put on the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness” Oh! By the way, I now have three children, and my daughter dances with me in the ministry! God bless, and continue to do the work of the Lord!

  17. Jocelyn says:

Thank you Lisa, my daughters dance with me also. Please email some pics, and what church you are a part of.

  18. Jocelyn says:

Shaita, thank you for sharing. I have always wanted to visit your nation. I will tell you why one day. But the blessing of technology has allowed us to fellowship.

  19. Jocelyn says:

@Merdis, you have just challenged me when you said that dance is your platform to get to the Father. Thank you for that.

  20. Jocelyn says:

@Erica, wow thanks for stopping by and all that you and your team are doing to bring worship dance to the world through the internet.
    I love your site.
    be blessed,

  21. Jocelyn says:

@Loretta, thank you my sister for sharing.
I would love to see you dance and sing
at the same time like Miriam in the Bible.
If you ever do please send me the video.

  22. Jocelyn says:

@Denise, i love your testimony. I have so much respect for you. It is an honor to say that you have served at the same ministry for over 10 years. Please keep me up to date.

  23. Jocelyn says:

@Anna, thanks for sharing . I am so glad that you found me. Debbie Roberts book was the first place I found out about dance in the Bible. I have links to garment info on this blog. Also the ebook garment of glory
has a whole lot of info. Check it out at the top of this page.

  24. Shawntee says:

It was the summer of 2007 when I began dancing. My Husband, our four children and I were homeless and we had to seperate and the younger kids stayed with me at a family member’s home and the oldest stayed with my husband with another family. One morning during prayer I asked God to show me how in the mist of this storm to still praise Him. It was then God deposited a fire and passion in my heart to dance.God taught me how to dance in the mist of the storm.I have never had any previous training in dancing. Truthfully I have never had the desire to dance until that morning. Last year on Mother’s Day was the first time I danced before people because dancing was so intimate and sacred to me because it was something I shared just between God and myself. I believe that now God desires to use me to help others Dance in the mist of a storm. I would love to grow in the knowledge of dance. I feel that God has made dance a part of my DNA now. I’m looking forward to your up coming tele-classes. Thank You for being obedient to God and helping dancers like me grow in the ministry of dance.

  25. Celeste Crenshaw says:

Blessings Jocelyn. Thank you so much for sharing your testimony. I wanted to be a ballerina when I was little and remembered my grandmother telling me that I can be a dancer as long as it is for good. I am recently understanding what that meant and I receive it as comfirmation that the Lord spoke through her words. I started dancing for the Lord seven years ago and love it more and more throughout the years. I’ve never had professional training, but the Lord blesses all of us with His teachings and lessons learned. I pray for direction and dance by faith!!! I love the influences that became of my stepping out on faith. Thank you for sharing your teachings…I pray and ask the Lord to strengthen me for His purpose!! Be Blessed <

  26. Patricia says:

Hi Joycelyn, God bless you richly.
Your testimony has been an inspiration and a blessing.
My name is Patricia Comrie. I am from Jamaica but resides in Aruba. I have always loved dancing and used this talent in the past to glorify the kingdom of Darkness. At the age of 21 I gave my life to christ and found out what is the true meaning of dance, why it was given and for what purpose it was given to me.
Dancing for the Lord is totally different from what we see in the world.
I started ministering in the dance 9 years ago as a soloist, and this was a challenge for me. The Holy Spirit was my only teacher at that moment.I have learnt that it is always good to trust the Lord and lean not on our own understanding. During those days of dancing I received testimonies of what people experience when I was dancing.I have seen where it has braught joy, peace and healing to the lives of many. Two years ago I had a major car accident and almost died. I had a long concustion and had problems breathing for months. I was not able to dance for almost two year.
I thank God for every trial that comes my way , because there is a greater anointing for the dance on my life now than before. It is amazing what God can do!haleluha!

  27. kathy e. says:

When I was about 9 or 10 our family used to watch variety shows on tv, like Ed Sullivan, and when singers were on or orchestras would play, my sis & I would get dressed up and dance for our parents. I always wanted to dance, but we didn’t have extra money for any training. I went to dances in high school, and would go out with my husband and dance. Then I got saved in 1972. In 1982 our church started a dance company, and I was encouraged to join, so I did. We were required to take a year of ballet, and earn aerobic points by exercising, because our pastor at the time thought that if we were overweight in the least, it would be too distracting. So I lost about 15 lbs. It was hard work, but I was determined to be a part of what God was doing. Over the years our dance company has changed; wwe only do choreographed dances for special days. about 3 times a year, which I think is sad; I would like to do more. I enjoy spontaneous worship dancing a lot more than prepared dance, because it’s from my own heart to the Lord and His to mine.

  28. Michele Trotter says:

Jocelyn: My testimony in dancing for Jesus was as a child even before I knew Him. He prepared me every ‘step’ of the way. As a child I took dance lessons and loved to dance. I also always was seen [photos] waving a flag. I even started a dance group called ‘The Patriots’ in the early 70′s with friends in the neighborhood. We used tamborines. Never thought about all this. I did not except Christ in my heart till after marriage and so dance was in my wild days WILD. As I grew in the Lord, God has giving me many giftings which I was using for His purposes. I would watch dance but never thought I would be dancing. I thought those days our done. Well my Father had another purpose and He called it forth. My Pastor saw it and asked me to be on the dance team at our church. I said ok being obedient to the Word and my Pastor. As I danced I am being healed. I love to dance for Him. My heart is to minister to Him and for Him for His people. I want His Presence to flow through me so as people see me flow they will see His Presence, His touch, His love. I am now the dance leader of the team and I am activating young ladies to minister to the Lord through dance and flags. Oh yes, we do alot of ministry with flags of all kinds and fabrics so that we can release His Glory, so that we can break the power of darkness over His People and the area. I loved reading your book on choreography, it has blessed me. So, it is quite interesting on how God has had His Hand on my life for dance. He has taken this broken life and put in His joy and we can express this through movement with our hands, feet, and expression. He has made my hands to war, my feet to step on the enemy. God Bless. Michele Trotter

  29. Judy Manor says:

Thank you for your ministry. Since I was saved I have always been what some might consider unconventional. Praise has been a part of my live because I love Jesus so much. My brother and sister in law have a banner ministry, Majestic Reign Ministries, and I began my praise journey carrying banners in presentations. They had two dancers God used to give me the hunger to dance. Now I am blessed to praise Him in dance with the ministry. We go to 2 prisons each month and I have the privilege to lead the women into praise with dance. Praise and dance are where I go to be intimate with my Lord. Did I mention that I am 63 years old and was raised in a church that taught against dancing? God does have a sense of humor!

  30. Chanelle Willabus-Mothersill says:

hi ,joycelyn, i want to give God praise and thanks for your ministry, its has been a blessing to me, God is good,my name is chanelle and i’m what you called a true blessing,i grow in very poor country ,didn’t have much, but i was blessed.growing up i’ve always have a desire to dance, about 10years at the of 14 my sunday teacher ask me to join the dance group at church and i was excited, not knowing that this was the gift God placed in my heart,i have a passion for dance, when i minster i give my all to God,God is good, and i will like to meet you one day,and i pray that God will continue to bless your ministry and family.

  31. Mercy Andujar says:

Hello, my name is Mercy. I’m a 51 yrs old lady and I love to dance for the Lord, but I have never had any education or training to dance. Before I came to know the Lord I used to enjoy dancing and was my dream to be profesional dancer and choreographer, but my dreams never became a reality. I spent many yrs of my life not following the Lord, now I’m in love with him and is my desire to be able to learn to praise him with dance. I was given a word that I was going to dance for him, I just don’t know how to start, but I know it’s in my heart, I just know it! BLESSINGS AND KEEP PRAISING THE LORD!
